Interview With Dirty South in DC

The interview with Dragan Roganović (aka Dirty South) at Club Fur was quick and to the point. Chubby Beavers was lucky enough to secure just about enough time to learn what Dirty South was really like. From what I got, he was very humble and modest about his work. He loves DJing more then anything else, and he really enjoys what he’s doing. What was most interesting about his interview was when he mentioned a finished track with Thomas Gold. Apparently it is called “Eyes Wide Open”. Here are some older tracks that I used to listen to from the day they were released.

It’s Too Late (Dirty South Mix) – Evermore vs. Dirty South

Bart: Hey how’s it going? Are you excited to be in DC?

DS: Yeah I’m always excited to be in Washington. It’s always a great party here, it’s good to be back.

Bart: Being a house enthusiast, I’ve been to a ton of venues, Miami, DC, New York. What’s your favorite place to play?

DS: Uhh thats very hard to say what’s the favorite place. You know a lot of places are really good. And they’re different as well. But its definitely not fair to say which one’s the best, because they’re all pretty good.

Bart: Alright, how about in New York?

DS: My favorite place to play in New York is Pacha. It’s one of those legendary clubs… It’s the type of club I like to play in. Its a square type room and a crazy sound system. So.. for a DJ I think thats one of the most important things.

Bart: Which country do you like to play in the most? Which country really has the best understanding of house music these days.

DS: I think right now, all around, North America.

Bart: Really?

DS: It’s my favorite place to play. The kids are really into new music, new artists…

Bart: The College scene

DS: Yeah. Electronic music here is really growing. And I’ve been playing in the U.S. for the last four years. I’ve just seen the crazy growth of people coming to the shows, and embracing house and electronic music. So I think this is the place to be.

Bart: Who do you consider your greatest influences?

DS: I’d say as far as DJing…one of my first DJs that I saw play live and got inspired was Erick Morillo. It was a few years ago and you know that man just brings so much energy and enthusiasm to DJing and I saw him play, he really freaked me out. I really sortof look up to him. He’s still doing his thing man, respect.

Bart: You just put out “Walking Alone” with Those Usual Suspects, “Alive” with Thomas Gold as well as many remixes this year. What would you say is the highlight of this year? Is this your best year yet?

DS: I’ve definitely worked hard this year, you know. Like you said I put out a lot of remixes and singles. I just finished a new single with Thomas Gold and I’m gonna premier it tonight. Its the first time people are gonna hear it tonight. You know, I’m working really hard this year and it does feel rewarding. And 2011 has been one of my most rewarding years to date. I’m just putting out new music, and I think I was touring last year a lot and I couldn’t get time to do a lot of production. So it’s one of those things where you have to keep a balance. And I feel this year I try to make that balance. I’ll say 2011 has be the best so far.

Bart: From your perspective, what is the direction that house music is heading toward? Do you think it has reached it’s peak? Many people say that its a changing thing. Where do you think house music is gonna be in the next couple of years?

DS: That’s a hard thing to predict. I would like to see more emotion and more melodies, and more musicality in house music. It’s definitely getting more energetic. I think I’m gonna try and develop more melodic sounds, and introduce some more emotion into house music. Because that was what house music was always about, you know, the groove and the emotion, and now energy.

Bart: What are some new young artists that you would be interested in working with and that the public should take in as a spotlight?

DS: You know I’m always looking out. I like a lot of new kids that are coming out. You know, I would suggest to look out for guys like Alesso, who’s already blowing up anyway. I’m sure you guys have heard of him. Two guys from Russia called “Atee”. Those are young kids that are different and also inspiring at the same time. So… from the back of mind I’d say Alesso and “Atee”.

Bart: If you weren’t a DJ or producer, what would you be?

DS: If I wasn’t a DJ or producer? I’d probably be trying to be a DJ and producer.
