Welcome to a new feature on Chubby Beavers called “Artist Spotlight,” where we identify a star in the EDM scene who deserves some love for their unique and well-crafted tracks. We will explain their background, talk about why they are awesome, and include a sampling of their best tunes.
So let us kick this off with the Dutch DJ, Jochen Miller. Jochen is blowing up – his sounds have been heard on big-name EDM podcasts such as Dada Life’s December mix and Hardwell on Air. He just partnered with Marco V on the big room release, “BASH!” and previewed his heavy-hitting new single, “Damnit” (Big & Dirty Recordings).
So how did he get his start?
Jochen van der Steijn, better known by his stage name, Jochen Miller, is from Mill, Netherlands. At 16, he began spinning at a disco owned by his father, where he became a resident DJ. At the age of 18, he had a residency at Zino’s dance club in Tilburg, NL. In 1999, he won the Dutch Mixing Championships at Dance Valley, where he received attention for spinning three turntables. In 2001, he became the first resident DJ at The Matrixx club, in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
He has since played at many of Holland’s underground venues. In 2008, his single “Lost Connection” was featured on Armin van Buuren’s popular annual compilation mix album, A State of Trance 2008, making him known internationally. In 2010, he signed to David Lewis Productions DJ Agency and in 2011 wrote the song “Rotunda” with Markus Schulz, which was debuted at Armin van Buuren’s A State Of Trance 500.
Why does he deserve Chubby Beaver’s “Artist Spotlight” status?
Jochen possesses a versatility in his productions that is hard to find. His tracks range from trance to big room electro to progressive – with many fusing elements of two to three of these genres, such as trance/progressive hybrids “Flashback” and “Troucid.” Jochen can go ahead and drop bangers like Dada Life (Cheer Up! was featured in Dada Life’s December mix) or own stages with trance heavyweights like Cosmic Gate and Armin van Buuren – the EDM world is Jochen’s oyster.
Jochen’s signature sound is characterized by a build-up of progressive chords that are impactful yet buoyant. They don’t lead to an explosive drop, but rather unique, steady, and assertive beats.
Check out three of Jochen’s smash hits below and catch him at the hottest clubs across the globe in the next few weeks, including Marquee – Vegas, Mansion – Miami and Ministry of Sound – London.
